Lil' Wayne
Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., Lil' Wayne discovered rap music at a young age and began to rap at block parties. It was at one of these parties that Lil' Wayne caught the attention of fellow rapper Lil' Slim, who introduced him to the owners of Cash Money Records. They were impressed by the then-eleven-year-old Lil' Wayne's talent in freestyle, but didn't sign him because he was too young. Lil' Wayne convinced them to sign him by leaving freestyle rap messages on their answering machine. The young artist was then paired up with fellow rapper B.G. and the duo released an album in 1995.
In 1997, the Lil' Wayne and B.G. added two more members to their group â Juvenile and Turk â and changed their name to Hot Boyz. The CD they released that same year became a gold-status hit; they became even bigger stars when their 1999 and 2003 releases went multi-platinum and double platinum respectively.
During this time, the members of the group also pursued solo careers. Lil' Wayne released his solo debut album âTha Block Is Hotâ in 1999. It went double platinum, and was remarkable in that save for one song, it was practically devoid of vulgar language. Lil' Wayne followed it up with 2000's âLights Outâ, which went gold and, contrary to his debut is littered with foul language. Two years later, he released â500 Degreezâ, referencing friend Juvenile's album â400 Degreezâ. It became Lil' Wayne's worst-selling album.
Lil' Wayne redeemed himself with 2004's âTha Carterâ. It peaked at number two in the charts, and allowed the world to see how talented a lyricist Lil' Wayne actually is. His follow-up album, 2005's âTha Carter IIâ, debuted at number two on the charts and went platinum. It also spawned two hits for Lil' Wayne in âFiremanâ and âHustler Musikâ.
Lil' Wayne is currently working on an album scheduled to be released in 2008 called âTha Carter IIIâ.
